Fish hook or 'Hei Matau' in Maori symbolizes 'Prosperity'. The first hooks used by Maori were made from bird bones. With the introduction of early diamond tools fish hooks were then able to be made from Pounamu (Greenstone/Jade). They were not really used for actual fishing but more for ornaments and jewellery.
Greenstone, or Pounamu as it is known buy the NZ Maori people, is considered a treasure (taonga).
In the past the Maori people made their tools, weapons and jewelery from it. Today it is most popular for Carved Necklaces.
