Before 24 hour television began in 1994, the TVNZ Kiwi marked the end of the day’s television broadcast in New Zealand, earning him the nickname Goodnight Kiwi. As the Maori Lullaby, Hine e Hine played, the Goodnight Kiwi would switch off the lights and put out an empty milk bottle on the front porch of the television station as the Cat leapt about and pulled faces at the camera. Goodnight Kiwi slept in a satellite dish with the Cat curled up on his feet as the animation ended.
